Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.

Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then found many other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.

City officials stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.

A high-ranking political figure commented the attack rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
