PSG Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Super Cup in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the season-opening cup on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the French Cup holders after the French winger opened the scoring early on.

However, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to seize a surprise advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to force the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the past thirteen years.
