Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
