The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
