RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
